A Day on the Green: Finding the Good in Life

It was a few days before the start of fall, and the company’s annual golf day had arrived. I work for a company that owns a golf course, and once a year, we get to spend a day out there at the company's expense. This year, the weather was perfect, a wonderful balance between the warmth of the late summer sun and the occasional cool breeze. I had a golf cart to myself, which made the day feel even more relaxed.

Teeing off at the first hole, I couldn’t help but notice how the dew on the freshly cut grass sparkled under the sun. The serenity of that moment made me pause, realizing what a pleasant way to start the game. There were three of us in our tee-off group: myself, Steve, and Ross. We played "Scramble" some times called "Best Ball", and as luck would have it, at least one of us always hit a great shot, keeping the game fun and exciting. We laughed, shared stories, and found ourselves immersed in the simplicity of a well-played round.

The course was beautiful, and every now and then, a resort vehicle offering complimentary food and drinks would make its rounds. I had the freshest sandwich I’d tasted in a while, and it was moments like that which added to the joy of the day. What made it even more special was that it happened to be on my birthday, a small personal highlight on a day that was already turning out to be one of the best in years.

As we played, I reflected on the simple but profound pleasure of it all. How often do we get days like these, where everything just feels right, and you look back and realize it stands out as one of the best days in life? Perhaps, the trick is to recognize those days when we’re living them. We spend so much time looking for grand experiences, but it’s days like this—marked by good weather, good company, and moments of peace—that hold the true riches of life. Wisdom lies in recognizing these moments for what they are: gifts.
