A Retreat to Remember: Mount Engadine Lodge

Many people have stories of their time spent in mountain lodges, but every now and then, a place surprises you with more than just comfort—it offers moments that stay with you forever. Mount Engadine Lodge was one such gem. While some may seek a five-star rating, what we found were five unforgettable moments that defined our retreat. Our group of seven set out for the base of Mount Shark in the Spray Lakes Provincial Park, and from the moment we arrived, the experience was nothing short of magical.

The Arrival
As we walked from the parking lot to the lodge, the crisp autumn air filled our lungs, carrying with it the faint scent of wood smoke. The breeze whispered hints of snow, though none had yet fallen. Excitement built as we approached Mount Engadine Lodge, knowing our retreat was about to begin.

Tom led the way, holding the door open for us as we entered the lodge. The warmth from inside enveloped us, a welcome contrast to the chill outside. My first remarkable moment was stepping into the cozy room just past the foyer. A roaring fireplace crackled, and the welcoming smiles of the staff made the warmth not just physical, but emotional.

After check-in, some of us settled into rooms in the lodge, while others, like me, stayed in a chalet. I was given the Elk Lodge suite, a charming space attached to the main lodge. Kylie, one of the staff, walked me to my suite, pointing out the features and letting me know that dinner would be served in an hour. The suite was a picture of rustic comfort, with a gas fireplace styled like an old-fashioned stove, complete with a Bullwinkle moose figure on one side and early 20th-century skis on the wall. The bed, with its thick white comforter, promised a night of restful sleep—a promise it kept.

Dining with a View
As dinner approached, I made my way back to the main lodge, passing through the room with the still-crackling fireplace. The dining area was warm and inviting, with pinewood tables polished to a high shine, and bell-shaped light fixtures hanging above.

I took a seat at a large table facing a massive window that framed an incredible view. My second unforgettable moment was the sight of the Spray Lake Mountains across a shallow valley, with a zigzagging creek cutting through the valley floor. Mount Shark's snow-capped peak rose majestically, filling me with a sense of both grandeur and humility.

The meal itself was nothing short of spectacular. We started with saffron and potato soup, garnished with crispy speck and a dollop of whipped brie. The main course featured Alberta beef tenderloin, complemented by horseradish and juniper foam, rainbow beets, roasted potatoes, and green beans. The flavors melted in my mouth, each bite more delightful than the last. Dessert was a decadent chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier sponge, a perfect ending to a meal that left me in awe. I told Eric, the manager, that it was the best meal I had ever had, and he promised to pass on my praise to the chef.

Evening on the Deck
After dinner, our group gathered on the deck overlooking the valley. As dusk gave way to night, we circled around a granite table with a central ring of sparkling glass chips that danced with blue and yellow flames. The sky above was a blanket of darkness, pierced by a single bright star—a star to wish upon.

Our outdoor adventurer, Matt, regaled us with tales and anecdotes as we shared stories, dreams, and personal reflections. The night was filled with warmth, not just from the fire, but from the camaraderie we shared. At one point, we raised our glasses in a toast to the evening, and in that moment, I realized the true magic of a retreat: the bonding of friends, family, and teammates. This was my third amazing moment, a realization of the power of connection.

The Hike
The next morning, we set out on a 90-minute hike up and down the mountain. I woke feeling refreshed, thanks to the cozy bed and thick comforter. A light dusting of snow covered the ground as I stepped outside, the sun hidden behind clouds.

After a hearty breakfast, we grabbed our lunch bags and met Shannon, our guide. The hike began under tall evergreen trees, their pointed tops dusted with fresh snow. The path, slightly wet and covered with tawny dirt and stones, wound its way up the mountain. The snow started falling again, but as we climbed higher, the effort warmed us, and soon jackets were shed.

Despite being the oldest in the group, I kept pace, even enjoying the light-hearted teasing about the climb taking the wind out of me. The hike was filled with small moments of wonder—Jude and Maria snapping photos, Jason kicking away a troublesome stone, and Kelsey marveling at the water droplets on the trees that glistened in the sunlight. When we reached the top, I experienced my fourth amazing moment: standing on top of the world, looking out over the deep valley and the surrounding peaks. The hike down was just as delightful, a perfect end to a rewarding climb.
